For Exhale readers, time can be both a friend and enemy.  We are allowed time to grieve, time to heal, time to assess, and time to… well, obsess.

Submissions on the theme of “Time” will be accepted from May 1- 31.  Submissions may be narrative, prose, poetry, visual arts.

    Submissions Guidelines

For general inquiries, please email admin@exhalezine.com

    SUBMISSIONS

Exhale is a totally volunteer-run publication that strives for a literary audience.  We are always looking for new contributors from many different types of background: essays, commentary, personal revelations, art, photography, or another medium that reveals a less-than-obvious aspect of pregnancy/infant loss, childless-not-by-choice, or infertility struggles in a creative and compelling way.

WRITTEN CONTRIBUTIONS:  We do accept previously published pieces from a personal blog as well as original, unpublished works. Please submit written pieces to ExhaleSubmissions@gmail.com .   Please include your submission in the text of your email rather than by attachment.

ARTWORK & PHOTOGRAPHY:   These should be submitted in .jpg format to ExhaleSubmissions@gmail.com.  Please include a caption/title for all artwork and photography, as well as a brief written background of your work: how does it contribute to the voice of Exhale?  What does this visual piece mean to you?

Because we are staffed by volunteers, we can only compensate our writers in exposure to our audience.  Our columnists enjoy great publicity for their own blogs, books, websites, and projects.  Many find great reward in doing something good for the world of healing arts.

    ————————-
    We generally do not publish
    • Eulogies for babies or young children who have passed away. (We have our reasons, trust us.)
    • Advice for other readers. (There is already plenty of self-help material out there.)
    • Anything that is religiously or politically preachy or anti-abortion, even if it is creative.
    • Contributions in a casual girlfriend-to-girlfriend tone.

    ————————–

If we decide NOT to use your piece:

Please don’t be discouraged about writing about your situation or deterred from submitting to Exhale again in the future. We receive a lot of submissions, which means we have the grim job of turning many of them down.   We recognize that the stories you send us come from fragile places inside your heart, and we respect and honor each and every one of the submissions we receive.  If we pass on your piece, it is never because your story isn’t worth telling.  It is generally because it isn’t what we are looking for at this time.

    The Spring Issue is here!

It is with great pleasure that I introduce Kristin Binder and Sara Clement, two new members of the Exhale team. Both Kristin and Sara have contributed their writing to Exhale in the past and have now brought their cultivating and editing talents. Kristin and Sara worked tirelessly to find new writers, photographers, and artists.

This issue’s theme is our experiences on the roller coaster of infertility and life after babyloss. Although each subject is unique, the similarities in the pieces are the moments of anticipation, a dramatic plummet, the eventual moment when we place our feet back on the ground.

We hope you find connection, love, and light.

    The Exhale Team

    Producer: Melissa S.
Editors: Kristin Binder and Sara Clement

Spring is here…  And soon we’ll have a new issue of Exhale!

In the past few months we were having some technical difficulties with the comment function.  Everything should be working.  We’ve been running some tests, and feedback is always welcome so please let us know if you encounter any error messages.
